less space in your home and are generally less expensive to set up than larger
home gym equipment. There are a few things you will need to review to get
started with your strength training routine.
The first thing you will need to workout effectively with free weights is a
weight bench. Read

are foldable for easy storage if you have limited space in your home. A bench is
necessary for working out your chest, back and abs. The best benches have
incline and decline positioning and are adjustable.
You will need an assortment of different weights or an adjustable dumbbell set

for the home gym. They are not expensive and come with a decent amount of weight
to get started. If your dumbbell set doesn’t come with a barbell, you will need
one. There are two different kinds of bars, standard and Olympic bars. Olympic
bars have a larger diameter and are more solid for holding more plates. Make
sure you buy the correct bar to fit the plates.
Weight plates for home gyms come in standard and Olympic styles. Standard plates
have a smaller hole in the center and won’t fit on an Olympic bar. Plates come
in rubber, metal and plastic. Plastic free weights are the cheapest and probably
won’t last long in a well used home gym. Start by reviewing all options and make
sure you can add replacement plates easily later. You will probably start out
with a basic set, but you want to make sure you can add weight later as your
fitness level increases.
