Electric Treadmills Or Non-Motorized Versions – Which Are Better?

With so many high tech treadmills available today, first time buyers are often overwhelmed by the options available and can overlook the straightforward manual model. While electric treadmills are a more appropriate choice for a professional or serious runner, who requires the variety and stimulation offered by the many features included on most of today’s electric models, the manually operated treadmill is a much cheaper alternative for a beginning runner or a habitual walker. The lack of fancy electronic features does not necessarily mean a sacrifice in the quality of the machine, so don’t dismiss manually operated models without a careful consideration vs. what it has to offer.

In weighing up manual vs. electric treadmill models, the most important consideration is the user’s needs. Manually operated treadmills will probably not be suitable for someone who plans to use the machine heavily, and requires daily challenges incorporated into their routine which would be possible with the speed and incline controls offered by an electric model. A manual treadmill is more appropriate for a walker, or light runner, or someone who intends to use the treadmill only infrequently. But do remember – without an electric motor, it is your energy that is powering the machine, so it is important to remain motivated with a manual treadmill. It can be difficult to build up momentum at first to work up to a good speed manually, and as it is the speed of your footfalls that dictates the manual treadmill’s speed, the machine will only go as fast as you do. But this, of course, does offer an excellent workout for your lower body, as you are running the machine with your own power vs. one that requires electricity.

Many people choose manual treadmills because of the reasonable price, and while this might be a wise investment if you are unsure of the level of your commitment, a machine that doesn’t require electricity means hard work, which can be off-putting to a beginner. These days, it is possible to buy electric models at very competitive prices, particularly if you consider refurbished or remanufactured models.

There are advantages to manual vs. electricity consuming treadmill models, but the most appropriate choice depends on the user. Before purchasing either, weigh up what each model has to offer in terms of your own needs, and decide which model will be best for you.
