Why You Should Avoid Cheap Home Gyms

If you shop in a department store for fitness equipment, you will find yourself surrounded by cheap home gyms. At first glance, these cheaply made gyms seem like a great deal. After all, why spend a few hundred dollars more when there is a much more affordable model right in front of you? Well, in some cases the home gym could be a good bargain, but in most cases the cheapest models are junk.

On closer inspection, you will often find the cheap gyms have inferior parts. You can find affordable home gyms made with quality parts, but you will have to shop around. Stay away from gyms with plastic pulleys; steel will last much longer. Look at the cables on cheaper gyms, they are often much thinner than the ones used in the best home exercise equipment. Cheap parts will result in a short lifespan in a home gym. Spend a little more for higher quality parts. The gym will last much longer and be more affordable in terms of repairs and replacement costs.

Any home gym should be sturdy. If you can move it at all, it is cheap and you should avoid it, even if it’s very affordable. Shake the gym; there should be no movement. Larger equipment should be able to support your body weight if you hang from it. The motion should be smooth when using all parts of the home gym. Jerky or unsteady movements are a warning sign that the equipment is cheaply made.

Take a close look at the upholstery. On the cheapest gyms, the upholstery is very thin and flimsy. Cheaply made upholstery will quickly wear out, especially with fairly heavy use. If you can afford it, look for a home gym with good quality material that will stand up to your workout. The padding should be thick enough to provide a comfortable workout with proper support. Cheaper models have insufficient padding and are often uncomfortable for working out.
